WFMW - Heat embossing

Disclaimer: DO NOT attempt to do this if you are under the influence of two pots of coffee, are severely accident prone, or are under the age of oh, still living at home. I don't want to be responsible for you burning down your house!

Okay, then. On that note!

Over the weekend I began my Christmas card making frenzy. My goal is to have them all done and mailed by December 1st. I don't want them sitting here on December 28th like I did a few years ago! So anyway, I decided this year to do a little heat embossing to fancy up my Christmas cards.

I don't actually own a heat embossing tool, but I figured my hair dryer was hot enough since I practically burn my scalp some mornings with it, and that I would be fine.

Wrong.

After five minutes of listening to my hair dryer humming and me trying pointlessly to keep my paper from blowing away, I gave up. I had put a heat embosser on my Christmas list, but I figured I was going to have to go and buy one after all.

Until I remembered a conversation from last Christmas where someone else shared she had used the burner on her stove, and that it did the trick just nicely.

I had to try it. I turned the burner on to almost high, let it heat up, and held my craft over the burner to let the heat do its work.

You know what? It actually worked! In less than a minute my embossing powder turned all nice and shiny, leaving me with a pretty little white Christmas tree image to place on my cards.

I still want the heat embosser, but this little trick saved me $40 and a week's worth of waiting until I could get back to the city.

And I didn't burn anything. I promise.

*As of December 1, 2008, Under Grace & Over Coffee will be moving to TypePad. Stay tuned for details!*

What a great idea. I lack both the hair dryer and the heat embosser, but thankfully, I have a burner. ;) Blessings!

Really great tip! What is the difference between typepad and blogger? Why are you moving, if you don't mind me asking. I always wander what the draw is to typepad.

I would love to know how you got it heated and not spilled the powder? :) Sounds like a great way to do heat embossing without a heat gun.. Great tip..

The toaster works really well for this too!

That is a neat idea! I actually do have an embossing blow dryer thingy, and I use it ONCE a year: for Christmas cards!

When I was still living at home and my mother 1st started Embossing, we didn't have a heat gun. She used the stove as well and it worked great! Just don't use a gas stove as it will burn the paper!

No picture of the card? awww, bummer:(

I have an embossing gun. If we lived closer, ya know, in the same country, I'd loan it to you.

FYI when/if you ever get one--while it is hot (even if it's turned off, don't let it go "nozzle down" (either over the edge of the table or if you get a bright idea to store it in an empty can , etc...) The heat rises and burns out your motor...lesson learned the hard way. That little wire stand attached to the end? Yea, there for a good reason :)
